The Passamaquoddy Tribe

The Passamaquoddy people have lived and flourished for fourteen thousand years within our Aboriginal , primarily in Eastern Maine and Western New Brunswick, Canada. We live along the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and its numerous bays and rivers within the deep forest.

Throughout our history, the Passamaquoddy people have lived in harmony with nature.

Our way of life

Our way of life was to hunt, fish, trap, and gather food and medicine, and employ the environment’s natural resources to sustain our communities. Over the past 400 years, the encroachment and degradation of the resources in our homeland forced us to adapt, precipitating a shift away from our traditional indigenous economy. We had to find alternative ways to survive and feed our families.

The first to harvest

The Passamaquoddy were among the first to harvest wild blueberries and have been doing so for more than one thousand years, making these fruits an essential part of our diet, economy, and culture. The Passamaquoddy Wild Blueberry Co. embodies this long tradition and ongoing commitment to wild blueberry farming and its cultural significance, which has helped sustain the Passamaquoddy People.
